I get my problem solved as well by using the nightly build and ensuring
that I specified ActionMessages in the methodParams in the
validator-rules.xml.

I have encountered (but not yet solved) a similar problem. I am trying
to use a custom validation rule (Matt Raible's TwoFields check) and am
getting the same error :(
I think its jar related -- let me know if you are able to resolve the
issue -- I will do the same.
