Snappy 1.1.0 Cassandra 2.1.2 compability

What’s the recommended way of upgrading from 2.0.9 to 2.1.3? Is upgradeSSTables required? According to http://www.datastax.com/documentation/upgrade/doc/upgrade/cassandra/upgradeC_c.html it should be possible
