production cluster - so I guess we'll upgrade 1.0.6 -> 1.0.11 -> 1.1.4,

Then it's probably due to [1] explained here [2] -- In this case you
either have to upgrade all nodes to 1.1.4 or if you prefer keeping a
mixed-version cluster,
I would try nodetool resetlocalschema.
