All windows, in all Spaces.
Many apps (incl. LC) I have assigned to a particular space, so I thought
that might be it - but even Finder windows can't be grabbed.

You're right - the Help does imply I shold be able to do it. Problem I
have is that I can't grab a window to move it (nor can I use the
^-number method). Maybe something odd in my Spaces setup

just gram the SE, move to the space and drop it

that you need to be on OSX 10.7 or later for this to work.
