you should see if another version of ubuntu 12.04 works on your computer like Xubuntu. The problem could probably be something specific in 12.04 like in the graphic drivers, kernel or unity. anyway a more appropriate place to get help would be the forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/ good luck!

Nautilus patches in the interim would probably be a good idea; you are right marlin is not yet mature enough to be considered at this time. By the looks of it nautilus patches might be *necessary*.
