In 12.10 certainly (and possibly 12.04, I can't remember) the first
software updater window morphs into the progress dialog, essentially
solving that problem

This is effectively part of the Software Updates specification, which
I _should_ be working on implementing for Raring:

Updates are grouped according to the applications they belong to, and
those applications get presented in a more familiar fashion. One of
I really like this. It simplifies things for most users, whilst allowing
people who want more detail to expand the category easily.
A few minor additions:
- An arrow next to expandable items to indicate that more details are
available
- Expandable results should be shown as: Application Name (X P
