As a side note, last time I talked to elementary devs about their version of
the issue (in Gala the menubar is rendered in the traditional way, inside
the
window, but addind the appmenu as an extra menubar item is still kinda ugly
nevertheless), they were considering rendering the appmenu in Plank.
Yeah, gnome apps are quickly becoming more and more inconsistent with
unity. I'd really like to see an official Unity HIG and official ubuntu
apps that properly follow it. Elementary OS luna is a good example of doing
this, all their apps feel very consistent with each other.

If we were to do this, the title would need be moved over so the menu
doesn't overlap the launcher. Then something needs to go into that corner.
Window controls would be a bit confusing when not connected to any specific
application visually. Moving the menu into the app is a no go because HUD

You're right. The actual implementation isn't very nice. I also think that
the best solution would be to make the application title clickable.
