I'm needing the 96 driver too (Old MX400 card). Noveau drivers just not
giving me the performance I need.
I am probably going to try the #7 & 8 suggestion. It is a new build PC
so if I wreck it not much lost. Can always start again (and maybe try a
different graphics card if I have anything new
Not sure if there are two issues here, some get complete freeze, and
some can get to the command line with CTRL + ALT + F1.
I'm in 12.04 64 bit, using Radeon graphics with the open source driver.
I get a complete lockup.

Thanks, I don't know what xorg is or what package the keyboard layout
definitions belong to... but as you can see I have run the apport
command and it's appended a bunch of no doubt fascinating technical
detail about my pc to this bug report, hope that helps!

I can confirm the same behaviour on my laptop.
I changed the permissions to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (sudo chmod 666
/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and tried again but still not able to save the setting
changes.
I WAS able to save the changes when starting nvidia settings as root (sudo
nvidia-settings).

which of the 16 updated packes did it though

when I install updates, Ubuntu Software goes off into the weeds - I've
left it for ages but it never concludes. The All tab works, but the oher
