Logging in as Guest account did not fix the problem. Seen same behavior
and problems as if I logged in the main account.

as administrator and change settings within the guest account. Not sure

This should have been a non issue. The default lists should have
blacklisted the NVIDIA drivers and removed them from the repo until a
fix was released by NVIDIA or Ubuntu. I along with many others made a
bug report at in plenty time for a launch day patch to prevent this.

after rebooting the 2D session still works but when attempting a 3D desktop

I've found this to be easily reproducible via unigine's heaven
benchmark, which uses tessellation and other features extensively.
Simply creating a OpenGL 4.5 context will not trigger the hang, and you
must explicitly request an OGL 4+ context as the default will only be
3.0.
The default is ignored however if the game requires tessellation or
other 4+ features, which is pretty much every big game released in the
past few years...

Running 13.04 raring with latest updates, but this kind of GPU freeze
has occurred numerous times in the past year.
It always occurs when the system is under high CPU and I/O load, e.g.
after resuming from sleep. Memory is not a factor, as there are
gigabytes of free memory.

was unattended, and I didn't notice (dmesg output below). I rebooted

NetworkManager stopped being able to connect to Wi-Fi access points, so
I attempted to restart it. There was no /etc/init.d/network-manager
script (presumably removed during the upgrade to Saucy), so I ran:
service networking restart
This caused all GUI programs to be killed
Tried it again, another crash, though this one had different symptoms:
application windows remained running but without decoration, and the

I think that hacks/crutches like separate app is very ugly and non-
optimal solution.
Moreover, very good solution already implemented in X for case with

Incidentally this is on Ubuntu 13.10, with a newer 3.12.5 kernel
(original kernel behaved the same).
Xinput says the touch pad is a "SynapticsTouch Pad V 1.03U2"

Yes, this bug is still in effect with 13.10 Ubuntu/Kubuntu and the latest
updates. In the next couple days I'll try out the 14.04 live cd and see if it
still has the same behavior and post back here.

Sorry, didn't take care of the bug report well. It was a (big) problem
during on week under the saucy alpha but was apparently fixed back then

I can confirm this bug -- also using built-in Intel 3400 graphics on a
Sandybridge processor. Similar problems -- although, instead of getting
a mousepointer stuck on the edge of the screen, the whole thing often
goes blank.
This patched package linked by doowttam fixed the issue for me, until an
