Sure is an issue on IBM Thinkpad R31 i830, updated to rc4 etc. Run GtkPerf a
couple of times and text is essentially black blotches and unreadable. Let me
give the 2.7.0 driver a try. It's using 2.6.3 driver now.

Installed 2.7.0 driver as reported by Xorg.0.log. I was able to run GtkPerf
three times O.K., fonts O.K. Then I startedl firefox and over half the fonts
in this message are big black blotches.
For what it is worth, GtkPerf was about 2% faster with 2.7.0 than 2.6.3
however it doesn't me
Bugzilla 21415 may well be the same problem. Some comments there said
that turning swap off helped. This Thinkpad R31 has 512 mb and is not
very happy with swap off, however it does run. The font smear or
corruption (extra bits) is slower in appearing. I'll attach Xorg.0.log

Not a show stopper, I turn laptop screen off manually. Of course screen is at
default 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024.
BTW, quantal boots on MAX BRIGHT (!) which I can turn down manually. I boot a
lot during testing.

Unity-2D seems to run and run and run.
The bug sure would seem to be Compiz Unity-3D trying some code that
hangs solid on ATI Radeon Xpress 200.
Any way to get a useful dump of that?
Now another problem is CD Live, since it comes up in Unity-3D with no
boot choice for Unity-2D.

Testing vervid I do updates most days and installs every couple weeks.
Typically there are a whole pile of packages (!) so us users don't install
package by package so we can't tell which caused the trouble.
I reported the bug on Dec. 19 and the bug persists on every update and every
couple week

I looked at the Lenovo support site.
The BIOS upgrade is for Win7 64 so I'll have to boot that ( if Ubuntu Grub
hasn't screwed up the Win 7 bootloader ) and see if the download and exe will
work.
Of course if a BIOS update fails I've got a dead computer.

What I did was install raring amd64 iso with defaults as it is in daily
build. I didn't do any changes, just installed, booted, then brought up
displays to set the correct resolution for the monitor which is
1600x900, wide, with all text running horizontal wide.
raring i386 iso install is fine.
xrandr --output VGA1 --rotate normal
worked fine. Any clue why the default as downloaded from daily build is
twisted left?

Problem still exists on brand new amd64 raring. Live boot of .iso any
resolutions higher than 1152 the systems settings displays only allows
counterclockwise and clockwise. There is no option for normal shown.
After install, same thing. The systems settings gui does not have
normal option for a
