What is the number of the bug you reported?
When you tried creating the xorg.conf I have posted in the OP, where you using
a live CD?
Did you make sure after booting that Ubuntu did not rename it and not use it?
Maybe you should increase slightly the horizontal and/or vertical range(s).

Even with 2.9.0's latest update, the maximum resolution without the
xorg.conf tweak is 800x600.

How does X proceed when no EDID info is available?
IIRC, there was an option in Gutsy Gibbon (or was it Hardy?) to choose
the monitor in the display applet. Generic LCD panel options were there.

945 card on a non EDID compatible monitor, even if I
EDID info is missing indeed as evidenced by get-edid's failure.
In this case, shouldn't the current display applet:
- offer a manual selection of standard LCDs/monitors? This would be the
complement of the "detect display" button.

- propose resolutions according to this selection?
