Just to see if ia32-libs was related, i did:
$ apt-get --purge remove ia32-libs
Then logged out and logged back in. I was still able to recreate the
problem.
Note, the firefox content is sitting inside a gnome-terminal, you can
see the console's flashing cursor above the ubuntu logo.

I only mentioned the keybindings because I don't use the ctrl-alt-arrow keys (I
didn't know them actually).

My feeling is that this is likely much more related to Xorg than it is
to samba.
Removing samba from the picture, are you able to log out of your session
and log back in ?
