I upgraded to saucy yesterday, rebooted, and within 30 minutes of use, X hung
on me.
It seemed like it might be a regression of bug 1097315 which occurred during
raring, so I booted into a raring kernel. This bug report is occuring with the
raring kernel (3.8.0-21-generic)
These files were after dmesg instructed there might be more info in
'i915_error_state' with message like:

GPU hung

just hung again on 3.9.0-2-generic (maybe 2 minutes of uptime).
This time, the mouse cursor moves, but focus doesn't change, and no typing
input.
screen will dim, then mouse movement brings it back to full brightness.
nothing in dmesg well after 120 seconds waiting.

If I boot into the quantal kernel, I do not see this issue. So thats what I'm
doing as a work around for now.
Each time I forget, and reboot into raring, I hang usually within 15 minutes of
usage.
It seems that this is likely triggered by desktop switching but thats

to my knowledge, I've never seen this issue with the quantal kernel.
I've only had the problem with 3.5.X. Yesterday when I rebooted, and
saw a 3.8.0 and a 3.7.X I didn't think hard and assumed that 3.7 was
quantal, forgetting

For reproduce, I'm sorry that I can't really help much. It just happens in
general use. Often times its when I'm using firefox and scrolling. My browser
window is always on the second display (non-laptop display) and scrolling seems
to likely trigger it.

I tried reverting the xserver-xorg-video-intel to previous versions, but it had
no affect.
I rebooted into an older kernel and i can still use compiz/unity.

I've verified broken in both 3.16.0-031600rc7-generic and
3.16.0-031600-generic
Additionally, I noticed that 'dmesg' on both of those showed:
[1.924049] [drm:i915_gem_init] *ERROR* Failed to initialize GPU,
declaring it wedged
I do not see that in my functional 3.16.0-6-generic .
Hooray.
Verified fixed.
booted into 3.16.0-14-generic and all seems well.

This is happening on compiz on quantal to me. usually occurs when I
switch a desktop via keyboard shortcuts.
screen just locks up, but all apps are still running.
