The bug you're describing appears to be different, I don't even run
empathy. telepathy-indicator and /usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5
are running, but produce no load.
I did track down what appears to be my problem. Most of my problems
happened when dealing with gnome-terminal, particularly
Paul, xrandr-align (#10) works for me on my Lenovo Twist on 12.10.

The bug doesn't reproduce anymore. Both the extracted-from-xfwm4.c test
program and xfwm4 now work, on my Ubuntu 16.04 machine with the NVIDIA
GeForce 750 Ti card. I configured it back to nouveau and enabled
compositing.

I believed I narrowed down the issue to how gnome-shell uses Xorg.
As said before GDM did not have any issues, and (i may be seriously
wrong here) GDM uses Wayland by default. When I launch the Ubuntu
desktop with Wayland, the graphical issue went away and is running
smoothly.
So I narrowed down

I set fractional scaling to 1.50 on screen 2 (Others 100%)
For the session it works perfectly fine, But after logging out and
logging back in the settings do not get saved (Nvidia gtx 1080 with 440
driver)

look was a little fuzzy. I assume this is something to do with the
scaling going on. Also if fractional scaling is turned off I cannot set
the 4k screen to 200% on its own as all screens then get set to 200%.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series (7537) laptop's touchpad unusable
I'm able to confirm this issue on a fresh/vanilla 14.10 install on a
Lenovo Thinkpad X230T. Without installing the modified driver linked
above, I'm able to workaround the issue by targeting the cursor on the
corner of a detached (non-fullscreen) window such that the two-
directional drag-to-resize
Getting the same error with Chromebook Pixel on all terminals
occasionally.
Not sure if there are any other related symptoms. 3D and video works
fine, although with 3D the system will start getting warm and kicking up
the fans. I haven't done enough testing to know if this is typical with
this lap
I was just able to reproduce it by previewing a 3D screensaver
(Molecule). After clicking Leave Fullscreen X crashes with this as the
error message on screen. Killing the session (ctrl-alt-backspace) will
recover responsiveness and allows me to log back in.

Ok, my hacky changes to Oneiric killed it, so I reinstalled to Precise,
and then applied your built fix. Works beautifully in the environment

280.13 does not work in Precise due to the X server being a newer version. I
