Using kernel 2.6.36 for maverick from the kernel ppa (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-maverick/) has allowed me to use xrandr to switch displays without the crash. The kernel does not seem to work for iphone tethering though, so I have to choose between stable X or tethering.
