removing splash from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub
results in the cursor showing properly every boot. It would be

(9800 pro), so we are probably both running the radeon Xorg driver. So

I've seen this problem in Kubuntu with xterms in kde4 just doing ls in a
fairly full directory (25 lines of ls output in 4 columns). I'm using
Noveau drivers too. My xterm background is white.
Sometimes the text in the top few rows is just gone, and the lost area
appears to be a rectangular bloc
FWIW I have not seen this problem in a long time. But, also my hardware
has changed since 2009 so that doesn't prove much.

So this just happened again. I tried to SSH in to get a dmesg dump, but
couldn't - said the port wasn't available.
Will leave an SSH session open, and see if it will stay open if I get another
freeze.

Cannot SSH into the machine when the freeze occurs.
Tried leaving a tail-f on sys.log, kern.log, xorg.0.log and dmesg.log when a
freeze happened, and no logging information was displayed.

worse on the upgrade to 14.10 - it is intermittent. It would happen only

Just recently (within the last couple of days) my Asus Zenbook lost the
ability to support two displays.
If I boot with an external display (via mini-vga port) it will work, but
the internal panel will not. If I boot without the external display,

Firefox this morning, X crashed straight out to the Ubuntu login screen

I think I was a bit confused this morning!
I've done a few cold boots and restarts since then, I've included them
in the attached file. I included all the Xorg log files in the first
directory. The first four directories in the tar contain log files from
cold boots, the last one is a reboot.
