I have been getting random freezes on my HP DM1 for a while now as well,
it definitely appears to happen a few minutes after a wake from suspend,
but there's nothing in the logs worth noticing.

During bootup the screen will display the ubuntu logo and then will
appear to load gdm but essentially freeze however pressing any random
key will cause the bootup to continue and the gdm/login will show.

All I can recommend is that someone here with a system suffering from
the known black screen bug installs ubuntu 11.04 on their system and
