If I switch to fglrx, everything is working as expected. Screenshots
work, and no glitches appear. And there are no more crashes. So, it's
not a hardware/temperature issue, but definitely related to the KMS-

Fiddeling with the HWCursor-Option in a xorg.conf didn't work either.
I'm using the newest mesa, libdrm and xf86-video-ati.

Installing fglrx results in an unbootable system, even rebooting into
failsafeX mode hangs completly after configuring the network. Luckily
there has been a kernel update since the beta, so I could use the old
grub entry to boot into failsafe mode and puge fglrx from there.

Seems to be fixed in Karmic Alpha3 ( shells are now smoothy ;) ).
Doesn't work in Ubuntu <= 9.04, same problems exists on other distributions
e.g. Gentoo.
Workaround: Ctrl+Alt+FX -> Ctrl+Alt+F7 -> Ctrl+Alt+FX -> works
