I would not say it is not fixed. There are lots of different graphic cards
manufactured over the years handled by that driver.
This is my experience on a HD3200 card:
On a newly installed Natty, the problem appeared about once a day. After
the first kernel update that included the proposed fix I
I added the kernel parameter softlockup_panic=1 and got a stacktrace.

Apport suggested reporting this bug right after I had to hard reset from a full
system freeze.
The screen turned into text mode and showed the log I'm attaching which I guess
was the last thing logged at that time. The keyboard lights were neither
flashing nor responding.
