Just a follow-up on Soren's comment, I have been testing
xinput_calibrator [1], it is excellect, with a goal of supporting
calibration of all drivers, and export to udev, xorg, xinput command,
hal. This should be integrated in Ubuntu.

Here is the output of xinput list-props
The latest updates caused two changes to the behavior.
1) the touchpad now works after logging out (I discovered this morning,
just before doing the update that it didn't work on the login screen if
you logged out, it only worked on the login screen on boot
I noticed from the list-props output that the touchpad is disabled, so I
tried:
xinput set-int-prop 15 "Device Enabled" 8 1
It didn't work, the device still remains disabled. (15 is the device ID
for my touchpad)

Just wanted to add that I'm still getting one crash per boot. With my
current usage this means about one crash per day. The crash usually
happens on opening a new tab in Firefox, hitting enter in the CLI to
execute a command, or opening a file in Netbeans.

I'm sometimes seeing massive packet loss on my wifi connection (for this
computer only) after a crash. I.e. pinging the local router has ~80%
packet loss while my coworker next to me is browsing the connection just
fine.
Disconnecting and reconnect doesn't fix the problem for me, but

I wiped everything and tried straight Debian Squeeze. The touchpad
works in the live-cd but not once you have installed it.
I then tried Xubuntu 11.04 (though my sound-card stopped working, that
is much less important to me). So the touchpad works under Xubuntu but
not under Gnome-Ubuntu.

Interesting, I wonder if we're getting the same bug. Let me know how
that new kernel works out for you. I can say that I used Ubuntu 10.10
on this system for 2 months with no similar crash. Ubuntu 10 used GNOME
instead of unity, so I figured it had more to do with that. I think

The correct calibration program I think is xinput_calibrator [1]

It is simple and usable, actively maintained, works with a number of
drivers, and has both an X11 and GTK version.

I have this problem on a T60p as well, and the modset=0 hack resolved
it.
After significant research, I believe this problem is resolved upstream.

patch was committed on 2010-03-09. I haven't found where it has been
