Just to clarify, X did not crash. gnome-session crashed because of mesa
not handling the failure. X itself should be pretty robust against oom.

a clue as to whereabout in the driver it fails - or rather it rules out
several potential candidates. A GPU hang will indeed be first noticed by
a stutter and be recorded in the kernel log - on your system, it should
not requi
Can you describe your freeze? Does the machine recover eventually? Does
the screen stop updating, but the cursor keep moving? Does the cursor
stop?
There's one more i915 patch that may be relevant depending upon the
exact nature of the freeze.
