I simply had to answer the OP's question - this is Linux, if it doesn't bother
the maintainers then they don't bother fixing it.

Interestingly now I have no need to log in and reset Xorg to prevent
high cpu. Now when I put in a username at the login prompt, the screen
goes black and re-presents the username request, the second time around
I enter password and get a desktop with Xorg running at around 1.5 cpu
which suits me f
