I have used Kubuntu on my Dell XPS M1330 laptop (NVIDIA GeForce 8400M)
since 2008 with no problems. Immediately after upgrading from Oneiric
to Precise I began having problems with X freezing at 100% CPU while
playing video, usually with Firefox playing Flash in YouTube. The

This is likely a dupe of bug #1001007, but apport-collect says it's
better to file a new bug, so here I go. If they are a dupe, it may not
be just video playing that causes it, or just 3D usage, but maybe VDPAU
or a combination thereof. I do use 3D compositing with KDM in K

Thanks for your reply, Andrew. So far 295.20 hasn't crashed, but the
crashy drivers sometimes went longer without crashing, so no verdict
yet. I will try the one you suggested after I decide on 295.20.

I don't think so. I don't have a Sandy Bridge system--not even close. And
that bug has nothing to do with NVIDIA. And this bug only happened when the
NVIDIA drivers were upgraded. That "nobody cared" IRQ message can be
caused by other things.

Alberto, thanks for the suggestion, but I've seen that suggested on forums
for months, for several driver versions, and people have reported that
persistent mode makes no difference. It also doesn't make sense that it
should help, given what it says on the man page. And I've used this laptop

I've never used any rotation when I experienced this bug. I've had no
problems since downgrading to 280.13. But I suppose eventually I'll
be forced to upgrade because of an incompatibility with a newer
version of X, and then...? Will I have to run old software? buy a
new laptop?

This should be a critical bug. Debian would call it an RC bug and not

This is happening to me also. I use Kubuntu, KDE, and KDM, not Compiz

I have noticed that when this happens, if I suspend and wake the laptop

While you're here, why don't you go ahead and post your system and

Tristan, I don't even know what kind of computer you have. Just search
for your laptop's model and "BIOS update," or go to the manufacturer's
web site and search there.
