Can you please try removing fglrx again, and before you reboot do:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libgl1-mesa-glx
I doubt this is a compiz bug , it probably something with fglrx's posrm script

sudo update-alternatives --config x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf
and you choose /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf, and reboot?

Just tried it myself on another install; it is broken; this is after
removing fglrx:

I don't use gnome so haven't tested it, but with 11-9 the performance is
muuuch better for me on KDE - with the exceptions of 4 lockups (xserver
segfaults) in 1 hour --> downgrading to 11.8 for now. Does anybody else
experience this?

package builds OK in Oneiric.
