This sounds like it happened around the same time as Mesa got upgraded
from v18 to v19.
Although it also sounds like a kernel problem.

In #1838192 I reported observing a crash with linux-image-4.15.0-55-generic on
a 16.04 LTS machine.
However the server does not crash with linux-image-4.15.0-47-generic or
linux-image-4.4.0-154-generic.

Not really, thanks.
Though if you wanted to go ahead with comment #4 it would provide a more
certain confirmation that this is the same bug.

I can confirm this bug too. But additionally I have noticed one more
interesting fact:
It seems that this bug affects only PCs with dedicated GPUs (AMD,
Nvidia). When I connect monitors into motherboard ports this bugs
disappears. In my case via VGA(60Hz) and DVI-D(120Hz), but I believe

Hi,
I am a new user of Ubuntu, just arrived today on this OS and I have
planned to surf a long long time here from now on. Basically I am from
Pakistan and I read many tweets (current affairs) in my language (URDU)
on twitter and I also use my WhatsApp in the Browser so when
well by that logic, then somebody with an amd ryzen APU (such as 3200G

affected by this bug.
But the other reason would be that intel's linux igp drivers are not
affected. That is a different reason as to whether the gpu is being

Good point, then there can be 2 explanations:
1) dedicated vs integrated GPU
2) intel vs amd/nvidia
I will try to get some AMD APU to test it.

When things freeze, are you still able to move the mouse?
If so then this would be a gnome-shell bug.
If not then this would be a xorg-server bug.

Now wait until the freeze happens again and then from ssh run:

That should create a new bug with information we can use to debug the
