Usually, I see the login page, I put my password and then it's 50:50
chance that it will crash. If it crashes, there's a brief flash in
screen and then it goes black. I cannot fire up tty with ctrl+alt+[1-7].

help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

When I boot Cosmic, grub is working OK and login screen is presented OK, but
after login the screen goes black.
When I boot in Recovery Mode" and "Resume" all is working OK and Nvidia driver

similar problem but in this case the bug would be in gdm3 instead of
plymouth.
As a workaround you might want to try disabling K

nouveau` & started suspending (suspend, few secs, wake, look for
pointer, repeat) but couldn't recreate. Lubuntu uses xscreensaver so I
was using mouse to wake up screensaver - so `killall xscreensaver`then
repeated testing. I ge

numerous suspends; from CLI or menu, dx6120 wakes (I need to get past
lock screen), but I've had mouse-pointer each time (at login screen,
it'd dead centre of screen; on 18.10 I got the feeling it was trying to
