@mahen I can confirm, logging in through ssh and issuing 'killall -9
vlc' unfreezes the desktop after a few seconds.
Jumping back and forth in the video timeline really encourages a total
freeze.

I've had trouble trying to capture a boot log with the settings
requested in the last posting. Different things have happened on
different attempts, including the boot stopping dead. I'll try for a
couple of more days to see if I can get a complete log to post.

Yes and no... That other bug has the precondition "If -synaptics is
installed", which implies that one needs to be fixed for the case where
synaptics remains installed. This bug however is fixed just by ensuring
synaptics gets uninstalled.
