I can't seem to reproduce any such issue with Mir demo servers or Xmir.
Old clients including Xmir work just fine when run against Mir 0.23 and
lp:mir for me.
Admittedly I haven't tested the critical combination of Mir 0.23 +
Unity8.

Oops. The /correct/ use case for -rootless was never implemented.
Although Unity8 doesn't use that yet, it would be the simple case to

Ok, I figured out hte EGL issue, it was my misunderstanding. Modifying the
tools to act correctly, I get this for eglinfo:

Steps to reproduce
1. select "digital stereo (hdmi)" as output device in "Volume control"
configuration "
2. go to suspend
3. recover and no sound on hdmi stereo

I just installed kernel 4.4.0-23.41 from xenial-proposed and it seems to
include whatever alleviated this issue. My laptop isn't crashing
anymore.
There is the occasional glitch: sometimes when I enter my password at
the login screen, the screen will actually not redraw at stay at the
login screen

I have had some kind of success on this front. In order to get Lubuntu
to boot and install I added nomodeset and idle=nomwait in the linux
parameters in grub. I found here
