The behavior being described here is from the shell (whether bash or something
else is unclear).
It is not relevant to xterm.
However, I notice compiz mentioned. Ubuntu has longstanding issues with that

Rotating display in system settings will cause desktop goes blank/black screen.
Only happen when switch from normal to 180 degrees or reverse way.
Steps to reproduce:
1. open system settings go to displays
2. in rotation select 180 degrees then hit apply
Expected result:

The only error I see is the following:

This looks like LP: #1432899 , only it seems to come from fglrx, hence I
can't fix it myself.

Is there anything additional I should do for testing? (besides being
delighted when my screen comes back from suspend?) I'm doing great with
the 4.1.0-040100rc7 upstream kernel. I made the changes to the bug
report as requested.

It seems I'm having an issue with the newly released driver.
I installed this driver using
sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates
Rebooting fails. It stops at

Since Bug #1427382 is missing I removed the status as a duplicate. I've
been wrestling with this bug since the 15.04 upgrade. I'm not used to a
linux desktop environment being so unstable. My similarities with above:

I have tried to build fglrx-installer on my distrib 15.04, kernel
3.19.0-18-generic, because Unity was OFF.
Install OK but no display after.
Uninstall with apt-get autoremove fglrx, then reboot.
Ok, again a X session, but Unity is still OFF...
