This bug is already present in 14.10.
My system is a HP Pavilion laptop with a muxless Intel/AMD combination
(Intel Sandybridge HD graphics and AMD Radeon HD6770).
A Workaround that works most of the time is to press Win+D again and again to
switch between desktop and game application.

Hmm... when I removed 2 additional DDR RAM modules (out of 4), being
said, leaving just the original two, glitches do not appear.
Interresting on this is that I let memtest+ running overnight with all 4
modules for 17 hours and... no error at all.
Weird. Need some more tests.

I'd like to confirm that Jace's solution (#127) worked for me using a
Lenovo T440s on an Ultra Dock with two displays connected on VGA and
HDMI. I upgraded to 14.10, updated to the 3.17.4 kernel, and rebooted.
Now both external monitors are recognised.

I ran into this bug on a fresh install of Debian 8 (Jessie) RC2 on an
EeePC 701 4G with Intel i915GM graphics. Linux kernel 3.16, X.Org
1.16.4, X.Org intel module 2.21.15.
Using SNA instead of UXA, as suggested above, seems to still solve it:

In my case, starting steam causes the text 'reporting 9 5 33 271' to be added
to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" three times.
It's always printed twice in a row and again a few seconds later.
For example these are two starts of steam:

Additional note regarding compositing:
*) The problem happens regardless if compositing is enabled or disabled.
*) Enabling compositing fixes the problem (as far as I can tell always).
If I start with compositing on, I need to toggle it for the problem to be gone.
If I start with compositing off,
The problem is also independent of multi-monitor configurations.
I use a dual monitor setup, and it happens regardless if both monitors are
activated or just one of them.

I tried to reproduce the problem with glxgears.
It can happen, but it is harder to reproduce than with steam.
For steam it happens every time, for glxgears it only happened twice out of ~15
tries.
But when it happens in glxgears, no "reporting 9 5 33 271" lines are
added to Xorg.0.log, so I think

corruption still occurs when changing display settings, unlike Unity it
seems to recover afterwards (the background gets messed up as you can
see from the video, but at least the desktop remains usable):
