Xorg process gradually consumes more and more RAM over time until the
desktop becomes unusable and either crashes, or needs to be rebooted to
get going again.

Yes, flash player works. Anything that accesses the video fails. video
editing, vlc, etc.
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, I had this problem. Then I updated all the
software, rebooted and it was fine.
To get around it in vlc, I used vlc -vo x11
