Update: I've been able to reproduce this without Firefox running, so
it's not specific to that application.
The most noteworthy thing I've noticed about the problem is that there
are two instances of the X server running in gnome-system-monitor. I
can provide more detailed info on this if needed.

I get the exact same issue using my Lenovo LT1421 Displaylink screen.
This has happened for ages and is not new to 14.x or a recent kernel,
randr, xorg whatever. Tried it all.
Once i get the monitor up and working with the correct modelines the
mouse pointer on my main screen routinely flickers.

one of the two monitors is freezing randomly: Ubuntu 14.04 // current-
nvidia (even tried latest driver from NVIDIA, but the same) can get it
to work, when I press Ctrl-Alt-F1 for changing to console and Ctrl-
Alt-F7 to gain graphical interface again. Then it working till the next
