I've narrowed it down to some interaction between Terminal and Emacs 24.
You can discount Claws and Gnome Do.
I can reproduce this every time with this recipe:
* reboot
* login
* hit Alt to bring up the launcher
* start up a Terminal
* In the Terminal, enter "emacs -q" to bring up a vanilla Emacs
FWIW, neither gnome-terminal nor emacs24 have been updated in a long
while, so this is clearly a regression in the X stack somewhere.

If, after you start up emacs -q, you immediate quit it, the recipe in #5

Synopsis: For me it seems to have been the nvidia-319 driver. No hangs
since changing to nvidia-331 (over a week now).
Symptoms: X hangs, reporting 100% CPU utilization. System is
responsive, can ssh in for diagnostics.
