I was able to get fglrx-updates running with the following work around:

I'm having very similar issues and I noticed that the same symptoms
appear when I change my screen orientation, log out and log back in.
For some reason, If I keep the rotation normal and use xrandr to
manually rotate the screen, I don't get these problems.

GPU hangs during login to rotated display
Oh, well, that's true that it has happened when I'm docked to an
external display, but it has also happened when I'm not connected to
anything.
The title of this bug has apparently been changed to relate only to the
rotated display. From my pov, that's premature.

The crash happened again and this time Apport captured the crash data,
but it didn't finish the process, it didn't open up the web browser to
create a new bug. So I have a file /var/crash/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash,
but I don't know what to do with it. Can you help?
