I tested this on a precise system I have access to, and the problem is

I maintain elaborate personal infrastructure to "fix" the xkb config on
my X server.
I don't have time to install a beta version of Ubuntu myself.

Here I am, I'm still on Trusty but I downgraded both xserver-xorg-video-
nouveau and libdrm-nouveau2 to Saucy. These bunch of log files are
referred to this situation, after downgrade. Now the dash seems ok, no
glitches. With proprietary drivers no glitches too.

I haven't had it happen to me recently, but I also haven't been using
VmWare recently. I have switched to using VirtualBox for projects I am
working on. I don't plan on spending time debugging it further since no
one else appears to have the problem.

Sorry, I don't use ubuntu (directly) anymore. The requirement for running
compiz made it impossible to suspend/resume consistently day after day (it
would usually fail withing a day or 2), so was unusable for me (having it
close all my apps and exit to the login screen was totally unacceptable).
