I have stopped using the AMD driver and I am using the free driver now.
I have not seen this for a long time now even before I have changed the
driver. I think it might have been fixed or masked after the initial
unstability after Ubuntu upgrade.

symptoms and found out they were caused by xbindkeys that was started in

The Issue is still affecting 13.04 and 13.10. Its my main PC so I don't
really want to move it to a development version of Ubuntu. Its not got
fixed in 3 releases so I am not hopefully its been fixed upstream in the

At this point I'm not sure anymore that we re all experiencing the same
issue, but mine (and Gilles, as he owns the same computer) was
completely resolved within bug #1166442 (here the link:

I've booted from Ubuntu Trusty Live CD on USB stick. It didn't offer to
install additional drivers (same as 13.10 and 13.4). I installed
nvidia-331 and started nvidia-settings. It works, recognizes the cards
and offers to switch between the performance mode (nvidia GPU) and
standard (Intel).
When
Now I use Ubuntu 13.10 on a VMware Workstation 9, and it works
perfectly. It hasn't an issue anymore. You can close the bug report.

Thanks Christopher,
I'm just marking this invalid because (a) it only effected Ubuntu GNOME
before it became an official flavor, and (b) I've not seen the issue in
Raring, Saucy, or Trusty.

well, the original issue is that it doesn't work after upgrade, and that
case is using nvidia-173 without the kernel module around..

tracked, could you please file a new report by executing the following in a
terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

so make sure you have linux-generic installed, it should pull the
headers and allow building the dkms module

This is occuring when I change users, and when I log in from the login GUI, but
not 100% of the time (!).
It just started yesterday.
Boot brings up the graphical login screen normally. I log in with the
