xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:7.1.0-0ubuntu1 (after typing the password, the
screen turns on and off multiple times with lots of "atombios stuck" messages
in the syslog and sometimes will start the unity session in low resolution

fglrx(high performance) without causing X to crash(segment fault). But,

Yes, I got frustrated too. Then I searched for instructions to build Ubuntu
packages from source.
I was able to build an Ubuntu package which includes the fix for this.

I have applied a fix similar to the one that was suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/479810, which
fixed the positioning of the drawing in mypaint, but also broke pressure
sensitivity
Applying that fix however only helped for mypaint and gimp, but not for
krita. THi

Currently vmwgfx is completely broken with any clutter based apps. It is
not possible to load gdm, gnome-shell etc.
This is caused by a certain GL extension, that is enabled but not
availble in the vmwgfx driver. There are patches in the upstream bug to
fix this.

the vague description. Please can you explain clearly what the issue is,
and look for signs of error in ~/.xsession-errors and double check the
logs for an event after the error.

Looks like one of these 3 upgrades is responsible. The last one was an
hour past the log for the first occurrence, but who knows. I'd find it
harder to believe that I had this problem for two days and didn't
notice.
