Notice this is concomitent with me upgrading my SSD to a faster one (840pro).
Might explain why I now meet the race condition...
The problem is that you installed fglrx driver and it does not support
your card.

Offhand this sounds like a "compiz crashed" bug, particularly if you're

When you're setting nomodeset, it's disabling nouveau entirely so you're

I do need more advice on how to "manually trigger a probe". In my
experience, connecting the monitor (after booted), then opening display
I'd give it a bit of time before declaring success. Since you've

Hmm, if the display is being recognised by the display manager and we
don't successfully turn it on, then that is a serious issue. After it
gets into the "no signal" state, can you please attach the output of
xrandr --verbose. It could either be that the modeline is incompatible,
or that we are not
