Xorg crashed with SIG
The main problem for me is that lots of packages depend on some packages
that need to be removed for the upgrade. There the upgrade would delete
wine, acroread, steam, nvidia-current, etc. lots of essential (for me at
least) packages. I believe that it is due to some wrong dependencies,
since eg. a
$ sudo aptitude show steam64

to the boot options (after quiet splash - correct?)
And no, it does not boot up properly, it still goes to low graphics mode

Can you attach the crashing Xorg.0.log from that boot, as I'd like to
see if the nouveau failure is related to that race? I don't think it is,
but it will be interesting nevertheless.

I've the same problem and I hope a solution in these days. It's probably
a problem of name because when i try to install software like wine,
teamviewer & co. "apt" asks me to remove these packages:
libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-quantal libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal
libglapi-mesa-lts-quantal libxatracker1-lt
Sorry i forgot to mention in comment #2 that i first tried to update the amd64
variant of the xorg-server from kubuntu-precise 12.04.1 to the quantal backport
before (update of quantal-kernel was no problem). But it resulted in a
DEFECTIVE xserver installation with only black screen after reboot
