If I use Gnome with NO effects, it all works very nicely. I guess there
are still bugs in the Nouveau driver on older chipsets like the N34.
Perhaps 3.7.x will be better?

I believe this i independent of the driver. I have the same symptoms
using the xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.20.9-0ubuntu2) driver.
Dconf settings I've played with (with no luck):
* org/gnome/desktop/screensaver/lock-delay
* org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power/active
* org/gnome/settings-daem
Reading these comments above, it seems that some users have compiz
installed on too low graphic card/chipset models, and got crashes (at
least its easy to understand that crashes are the highest possible
probability)

Title:
1002:6740 Unity does not load after install
This bug is caused by bugs #574397 and #1069365.
As you can see in the xorg.conf, the nvidia kernel module cannot be
loaded. This is so, because it was simply not build because of missing
kernel headers. The wrong screen resulution comes from the fallback.
Workaround: install kernel headers and r
The very same problem is happening on a HP Pavilion G62 which switches
between two VGAs: HD 4200 and HD5400. I don't know if the problem is
because HD 4xxx series is now legacy (unsupported) while HD 5xxx series
is not, but I also tried setting up makson96's ppa to install fglrx-
