I confirm that the fix from ppa:vanvugt/compiz (it is still not present
in the updates repository, and neither in backports) works under Oneiric
with fglrx 8.881-0ubuntu4.1 using Ati Radeon HD Mobility 3470.

with that additional patch, the kernel doesn't even boot, but stops with
a totally black screen just after having been started by grub. I never
see any printouts of the kernel... so I can not tell you whether there
was any interesting output that I was not able to read.

Also happens for me. X is completly frozen and the machine needs a hard
reboot. Logging in through SSH works though. 100% CPU utilization for
the process that was using the ATI graphics card, in my case that
process is always XBMC.

ATI graphics card fails when RAM increased to

that's not related to this fix. So you won't see a slow down when the
fix appears in oneiric-updates.
Can you please check what version of compiz you're now running? I
thought I had fixed the slow animation problems in my PPA; c
"Overheard" on IRC this might help pinpoint the no audio comes out of
the TV even when "High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo
(HDMI)" is selected under "Sound" > "Output" problem.
