I re-tested this in Natty and it still happened. But going off the
suggestion in that bug, I recompiled wxruby while excluding GLCanvas,
and I found the problem doesn't occur, wxruby works fine. Maybe the
issue is in Mesa as the bug suggests.

I have the very same problem, after upgrading to 11.04 from lts, on a
Toshiba Portege with the following controller:

Update: It just happened after unlocking the screensaver while in dock (not
inserted/ejected)
Switching to console works fine, but switching back to X still has black
screen. Playing with xrandr didnt help. Used /etc/init.d/gdm restart to have a
working X again...

Hello Bryce, so after spending the past 12 hours doing fresh installs of
Natty on my X201, thinking it was my corrupted install initially, and
then still having the issue on a freshly installed system, and pulling
my hair out trying to see what was wrong, I installed the special rolled
linux-kernel
I'm getting this error as well. I'm trying to run a game on DOSBOX and
if I switch it to fullscreen the X hangs, leaving me the only option to
force a reboot via tty (ctrl+alt+f1), because even a kill -9 on the
dosbox process doesn't restore the screen. My machine is a netbook

Adding to the above comment: I've tried installing dosbox on a Windows
FLP virtual machine (with Virtual Box) and it also hangs the same way as
the dosbox on the ubuntu directly.

Hmm, This problem seems to depend on the actual Intel chip:
eeepc 900: sometimes the broken fonts and other anomalies occur, restarting X
seems to make them go away.

Given how badly readable the display is on 82945G I would say the
importance should be higher then 'low'.

I think the last updated for intel didn't fix everything. I occasionally
get X reboots (at random), and other times the system becomes slow and
unstable, like a background process occuping all the cpu resources.
