We shipped 8.780 in maverick, so I gather the 8.831 version you had installed on maverick was self-installed either from the AMD website or some PPA; in either case it's not an officially supported upgrade path, so YMMV on upgrades. Perhaps dkms could be strengthened for handling this type of case
