OK, in the first place do:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core-dbg
and log out and in again. Then run "glxinfo" to see if it crashes. If not, then
try "compiz --replace".
After the crash, attach the new Xorg.0.log.old, /var/log/kern.log and
/var/log/gdm/\:0.log.1

So please upgrade the nvidia-current to the latest beta (version 270.29) to get

I downloaded and installed latest NVIDIA driver (NVIDIA-Linux-
x86_64-260.19.36.run) from www.nvidia.com. An /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
was created that references "nvidia drivcers", and I am able to boot
into linux kernel 2.6.38-5. I wish I understood what is going on here.

I just updated from nvidia-graphics-drivers 270.18 to
nvidia-graphics-drivers 270.29-0ubuntu1~lucid~xup2
System loads up and as soon as GDM displays the Wallpaper and Mouse cursor I
experience a hard lock up. No reaction to keyboard/mouse/power-switch etc.
I'm unable to provide any meaningful deb
