Closing out because while still valid (though not as bad w/ the 2.60.XX
drivers ), there is nothing to be done, it would be up to nvidia to
release 195.XX drivers compatible w/ the 1.9+ xserver - not going to
happen

I purged the nouveau package as suggested above and the upgrade went
fine. Subsequently (the next day or so), the update manager complained
that a bunch of video related packages would be held back and not
upgraded. This was fixed by reinstalling nouveau after the 10.10
upgrade.

@Joey, you're very welcome. I do have small issues with the fglrx, so
i'm waiting until the new system is done so i can install the ati
drivers manually and hopefully get rid of all these problems.

Here's the requested dmesg output. The only difference made by updates
is the mouse pointer now moves, though everything else is frozen.
