My comment on that bug:

Hmm, from the dmesg output it sounds sort of like your system was already
'sick' before X hung. Perhaps an out-of-memory situation?
Could you please explain more about the conditions leading to this
system freeze? And have you seen it more often than just this one tim

Hmm, would be curious if the audio player causes an out of memory
situation that crashes X.
Are you able to reproduce this with a specific set of steps? If so
could you enumerate them here? If the issue is caused by the audio
player, then that might help narrow down what it is doing to cause it.

Whoops, ignore last comment. ESR differs in this case. But the IPEHR

Fwiw, after hearing from upstream and chatting with apw, it seems this
bug (or rather, class of bugs) is due to vesafb being present during
boot. As I gather from apw, this is believed to need to be loaded
because of plymouth and/or for fallback if kms/drm doesn't load or isn't
available, however

Hi kjloh, I'm sorry you're having troubles with Ubuntu on this laptop.
Unfortunately we are not providing X development support in the distro

development support for these older chipsets directly in the distro.

I have observed this problem with a HP dv2500t running Natty (latest

/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled to true fixed it.
Seriously, what's going on here?

I think I can reproduce this locally, but it only triggers on X server
