I confirm this is linked to dual screen setup, since when I disable the
secondary screen, the issue disappears and gnome-terminal startup time
are back to normal. Mirroring mode is also fine ... So this is

Yeah that's because you have -nvidia installed. The -nvidia video
driver does not support xserver 1.10 so installing xserver 1.10 would
break it. If you really want to upgrade to xserver 1.10, first
uninstall -nvidia and go to using -nouveau.
We think NVIDIA will put out an updated -nvidia that

found in lucid-updates or via my PPA?

Given the kernel patch from upstream, that seems to indicate this is
going to require fixing on the kernel side. I've notified the kernel
team and will close out the X task at this time.
