Did a reinstall and my own solution from #11 did not work this time :-(
However I removed gnome-settings-deamon (sudo apt-get remove gnome-
settings-daemon) inspired by comments from bug #649809 and that has
solved the problem!
Not sure why that deamon is needed on XFCE anyway?

apt-get remove gnome-settings-daemon", not sure why that component is
installed in an xfce environment? I guess this is not a solution for you

I was hoping you had upgraded to Maverick :) I think the old libdrm
still should work (for radeon) so you can try force upgrading with dpkg
--force-depends, or --ignore-depends=libdrm-intel1 if I am guessing
right. Alternatively you can install just the libdrm packages from the
main xorg-edgers PPA

Attached is the Xorg.0.log from my current session. The entries from
