You're using kernel 2.6.35, which is not supported by the 8.723 driver
version. Furthermore you don't have the matching kernel headers
installed. Catalyst 10.10 should work if you install the matching
kernel headers to your 2.6.35 kernel.

I tested fix gconftool-2 --set
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/scroll_method --type int "2" and it does
not help on Dell Studio 1557 10.10/x64.
Last version of Ubuntu that worked was 9.04 than it got broken in 9.10, fixed
at the end of release cycle but the patch din't make it to 10.04

On a side note, after being forced to use TwinView (two monitors instead

/etc/X11/xorg.conf. This should be marked as a dependency and installed
when I installed nvidia-settings. I have a feeling this isn't an issue
on ubuntu but on kubuntu
This looks more like a gnome-power-manager aspect. When you log in as a
user (and I suspect the login screen counts as a user) it restores the
last configured brightness settings.
If you have more information that pinpoints this bug to X rather than

With 10.10, mplayer with vdpau is not able to read nicely 1080p x264 videos.
The same PC with 10.04 plays perfectly the videos with the subtitles.
There is a notable regression within mplayer or libvdpau.

I will fresh install on a problematic computer when I get the time. I

I run apport-collect 664691 as you request; moreover I add here to file
log from Xorg.
1th TEST:
- I changed manually in Xinerama=on saved Xorg.conf
- I kiiled Xorg, and then GDM logon GUI Comes up; I logged in at the first try
to use through main menu any appplicaton (amdcccle) GUI crash

instructions and everything goes fine until
sudo insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/dkms
which gives me the error "insmod: can't read
'/lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/updates/dkms/': Is a directory"

Fresh install, within the hour it froze. Not an upgrade issue.
Using this fresh install and will install xorg crack-pushers. For the
regular install on the same computer I will turn compiz off and use
metacity just to be sure.

System freezes when running on battery

I just did a fresh install of Maverick 64-bit on my HP EliteBook 8440p
with NVS 3100m graphics. I still had to use "nomodeset" to install and
to boot thereafter, but that's not an issue. After installing the nVidia
proprietary drivers, I found that whenever my notebook tries to power
its screen off
