Unfortunately, this bug report only shows the VLC output. To further
isolate the problem, some more tests can be done, notably:
1/ Try to use VLC with a different video output method, especially the plain
X11 output.

The last version almost works on my Dell i855 notebook. But there are still
occasional freezes when using SolidWorks/wine1.3.5 (big openGL app). If it can
help, I can post logs

Thanks for your feedback Anders. I tried to raise to vmalloc 256MB which
made the kernel virtual address space exhaustion error go away -
unfortunately it brought the kernel oops back :-( So the kernel oops had
only been absent because the driver never got loaded completely...
I attached the kern.
I previously included only the *.log files.

I'm seeing the same thing on Maverick () with GM45. Previously Lucid had
been fine.
When it occurs the mouse cursor remains responsive, but everything else is
locked up. Switching to a VT shows the following repeating:

fix this in an updated kernel image. Read through all the related bug
reports, I think the bug affects Atom CPU only. But it is urgent since
it makes the atom users can't boot/operate their computers.

The bug seems to affect most of the hardware the UNE is intended for so, in
my eyes, a proper fix is a "must have" for Maverick (as well all future
releases up to "Zippy Zebra" and beyond).
People reported the issue on HP Mini, Toshiba , Acer Aspire One, Asus
Eee PC, Gateway and Samsung
When I get this right, this option would disable some power management
features resulting in shorter battery run-times. correct?

Very odd. The first 10 or 12 letters on the line seem immune from this
behaviour, and moving the cursor backwards over the letter removes the
lines, but skipping to the front of the line and moving over the letters
again forward doesn't remove them. Both in xterm and emacs.

lol ok never mind, for some reason, my RIGHT shift key was stuck, or at
least when i hit it a few times the problem disappeared. I feel like an
idiot now but I hope this helps someone else having the same problem. I

Same bug applies for me with a new installed Ubuntu 10.10.
Nvidia Gtx 460 and core i7.
I can reproduce the behaviour mentioned by Reason (killing and restarting
gnome-settings-daemon as root).
Changing to the the nouveau driver didn't fix the problem for me.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, this report is the one that is stopping me to
update to Maverick my Asus Eee PC 1005PE netbook. UNR in Lucid is pleasant to
use.
Now, I think that it would be nice if someone of the affected people could try
to log in with a normal Gnome session, and tell here if in
Tried UNR 10.10 RC on my eee 1000HE and unity was pretty much unusable,
switched to gnome (and xfce) and everything was fine, so yes, the issue
probably lies with unity/mutter.

That’s indeed a kernel oops, though it is a NULL dereference rather than
a page fault. Unfortunately your Call Trace got cut off so it’s
difficult to say whether it’s related. Did you hard-reboot immediately
after the crash? Next time, wait a few seconds and press Alt-SysRq-s to
give the kernel

Video output works fine with any method. Only crash I noticed is in
"Advanced open dialog".
I enclose Xorg.0.log.old that can help debuging. I have backed up
Xorg.0.log, but it starts just after the end of .old log (when new X
server is starting), so I'm not enclosing it - you can still request it
Another confirm. X1600 rv515. As described above, about every tenth second. I
haven't timed the intervals though, I can't say that there are exact
intervals, or if they are more random.
Quite annoying, nevertheless.

Murz, please file a bug using "ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati" while
running the -ati driver. We would rather have -ati fixed than to
maintain two drivers for the same hardware.

I have similar issue with Intel GM965 integrated graphics.
Compositing is disabled after login. It is possible to activate compositing in
System Settings / Desktop Effects.
After logout I've got black screen.

I just installed KDE to see what happens when I boot into it. Everything
works fine in KDE except gnome applications. Firefox and Transmission
are still showing the same rendering issues, while Konqurer and all
native KDE aps show properly rendered fonts and themes. Also I cannot
load certain aps w
I forgot to say Bug #652731 shows that this happens with XFCE too. So
the problem is related to both Gnome and XFCE, which means it can be
narrowed down to something that is common between those two desktop
environments and the core i7 x58 with newer Nvidia graphics card
combinations.
